On January 16, 2009, Gail Bailey presented Legal Administration and Technology at the Law Office Management for the Paralegal seminar offered by Institute for Paralegal Education. This was telecast via the web so attendees were not only in Atlanta but nationwide. Below you will find a link to the presentation material.

During the seminar Gail mentioned a digital recorder model that was not included in the material. The recorder mentioned was an Olympus DS-4000 and, as stated during the presentation, this model is being discontinued (according to a vendor of same).

Also, another productivity tool you may want to try is SplitView which is an inexpensive tool to split your monitor in half (as opposed to installing a second monitor).

A few months ago the attorneys at the Ramos Law Firm attended the annual Workers’ Compensation seminar on St. Simons Island, Georgia. Among the usual updates on case law and MSA’s was a most remarkable lecture on ethics.

The speaker was Richard Pimentel, whose life story inspired the motion picture Music Inside. His life has been an amazing real life allegory of the way our ethical decisions can shape who we are and lead to spiritual (and, in his case, financial) reward. For a better understanding about how Pimentel has led a life of consistently making the right decisions for the right reasons, you should rent the movie, as I cannot begin to approach the breadth of his accomplishment within the confines of this blog.

In his discussion of ethics, Pimentel likened making decisions to playing blackjack. He posed the question about what the appropriate strategy was if the player has 16 and the dealer shows a face card. The answer is that the odds favor taking another card. This is an easy decision if the player has only bet a dollar.

However, Pimentel then changed the hypothetical to raise the stakes. He asked if the decision is still easy if the player has wagered everything he owns on the game. The lesson being that making the right choice is not always easy when everything is on the line. Nonetheless, he implied, we should strive to make the right choice at all times, regardless of the stakes.

Kids’ Chance, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation originally developed by the Workers’ Compensation Section of the State Bar of Georgia, in association with insurers, employers, attorneys, labor, medical, and rehabilitation groups. The purpose of Kids’ Chance, Inc. is to provide financial scholarships for children of permanently or catastrophically injured or deceased workers to complete their education. Through the hard work of many dedicated individuals, the Kids’ Chance program has expanded to several states.

Kids’ Chance was originally established in 1988 in Georgia. Since 1988, the organization has raised more than $3 million dollars in Georgia alone. Each state funds its own programs and spends funds on its own residents. Scholarships funds come from various sources, including donations by individuals, groups, organizations, foundations, and other professional programs. Another source of funding also comes from special activities organized by volunteers such as sporting tournaments, celebrity roasts, and annual events such as Fun Runs and Family Fun Festivals. Just recently, Kids’ Chance was able to raise additional scholarship funds during the Workers Compensation Law Institute held at St. Simons Island. During the Institute, Kids’ Chance hosted a Casino Night with a Silent Auction.

Please visit www.kidschance.org to find out how to help Kids’ Chance or learn who is eligible for funding.

Bryan Ramos, James Timmons, Adriana Sola Capifali and Julia Lindsey participated in the annual Advanced Workers’ Compensation Institute in St. Simons Island, Georgia. The Institute’s meetings were held from October 2 through October 4. During this time, one topic discussed was the use and implementation of the Integrated Claims Management System (ICMS) at the State Board. Essentially, this computer based system is the State Board’s “online” or electronic filing system. The State Board is attempting to become “paperless” and produce “real time” results. Other topics covered included Professionalism, Recent Appellate Division Decisions, Chronic Pain Management, Legislative Changes, Discovery, and the Future of Workers’ Compensation in Georgia. “The topics discussed are very timely and useful to the everyday practice of workers’ compensation,” said J.J. Timmons.

The Ramos Law Firm attorneys annually attend the Institute. According to Bryan Ramos, “[t]he Committee did a fine job at organizing the seminars and I understand that the Institute raised a substantial amount of money for the Kids’ Chance Foundation, which benefits the children of catastrophically injured workers.”
